Ceramic Tiles

LEARN ABOUT CERAMIC TILE

Ceramic tiles are formed with clay, hardened by oven-baking and (usually) glazed for a long-lasting finish—and we mean long lasting. You can still find intact ceramic tile creations in the ruins of ancient cities like Egypt, Rome, and even in the ruins of Pompeii, which endured a volcanic eruption over 2,000 years ago.

Supremely versatile and easily cleaned, it’s the perfect option for your next kitchen or bathroom project.

WHY WE LOVE CERAMIC TILE

Ceramic is one of the most durable surfaces you can install in your home. Unlike wood, laminate and vinyl floors, ceramic tile maintains integrity no matter the weather. It will be cool under your feet in the summer and remain cool as temperatures drop.

Glazed ceramic features a protective layer that seals in color and protects against fading, stains and water. For this reason, you’ll often see ceramic featured in high-humidity environments such as kitchens or bathrooms.

Ceramic can be dressed up or down to suit your ideal aesthetic. It can also be made to look like a longer-lasting version of many other surfaces like hardwood or stone. Plus, if it chips or cracks (which is rare), it’s an easy affordable fix.

HOW DURABLE IS CERAMIC TILE?

Most ceramic is forged to be very tough and can handle residential traffic extremely well. Ceramic is crack-resistant, and an expert installation can last several decades with the proper care. In fact, ceramic is more likely to crack other things than to be cracked itself—make sure you don’t drop anything fragile on this flooring!

In appearance, however, ceramic is only as durable as the grout that binds it. To protect against unsightly stains and dirt, you’ll need to glaze the grout and the tiles to create a long-lasting, impervious surface.

CERAMIC TILE ALLERGEN CONCERNS

Ceramic tiles have a hard, non-porous surface that resists usual allergen culprits like dust, dirt, pollen and animal dander. The smooth surface of glazed tiles makes them easy to keep clean, no deep scrubbing necessary, so you can keep dirt and allergies at bay with minimal effort.
